Well,

Although my diff did not go out completely at 24K miles (no towing and no abuse!) I started to get LOUD whining noise from the rear end.

The dealer said a "service" was i order to fix it... I asked wht that meant - they said a change to 75-140 synthetic oil was what it needed (for a whopping $110). I changed it myself and it made NO difference... after I spent the $ on syn oil they ended up replacing the whole axle wityh a 2005 type with the aluminum finned cover that specifies 75-140 syn oil ONLY.

I sure hope this cures it, I'm not comfortable with a rear end dependant on a finned aluminum cover (for heat problems?) and synthetic oil... although I believe in syn oil and use it in all my vehicles...

Bottom line, whine as loud as your rear end does and you will get a new one...
