When you put it in 4 wheel drive your front differential is locked... meaning your wheels (and tires) can only turn at the same speed. In normal 2WD mode, when you turn, one wheel spins faster than the other. By locking them, it prevents that from happening, causing the chirp and binding you feel.
NEVER drive in 4WD on dry pavement if you plan on turning! It can do serious damage to your front drive system (axles, differential, etc) and also potentially damage your transfer case!
